An international marriage is a marriage between two people from different countries. Although every marriage requires love, commitment, dedication and work, international marriages require more attention because of the variety of issues that may arise because of the many differences in culture, beliefs, expectations, etc.
At the start of every international marriage the foremost problem is the procedure of getting married. Because the law of each of the marrying couple`s country must be taken into consideration, confusion arises when the law of each other`s country conflicts to the other. One example for this is the marriage between a Japanese and Filipino national. According to the Japanese law, women in general are allowed to remarry in Japan only after 6 months of their divorce (this is not applicable to men for they are allowed to remarry as soon as their divorce is registered), but according to the Philippine law, when a marriage between a Filipino citizen (may it be a man or a woman) and a foreigner is validly celebrated and a divorce is thereafter validly obtained abroad by the alien spouse capacitating him or her to remarry, the Filipino spouse shall have the capacity to remarry. But unfortunately to be able to acquire a marriage license or the legal capacity to contract marriage (if the marriage will be held outside the Philippines), a divorced Filipino has to acquire a judicial decree of absolute divorce from the Philippine court. And because the court petition takes months to be finalized, many Filipinos encounter problems regarding their limited residence status in Japan. We deal with these kinds of cases all time.
